Spam, fakes and reports: protecting your community
What it is
Telegram protects communities in three ways. Filters: in groups with 200+ members, Aggressive Anti-Spam lets Telegram's algorithms find and restrict spammers. Gates: invite links with Request Admin Approval, or an AI bot admin that processes join requests. Reports: the Report button sends content to moderators, and reported spammers get limited. Labels also flag fakes: FAKE for chats many users reported, SCAM for likely scams, a checkmark for verified public figures and organizations.
How to do it
- Report a message: tap it on Android, press and hold on iOS, right-click on Desktop › Report, then pick a reason.
- Turn on the filter: group profile › Edit › Administrators › Aggressive… Turn on the filter: group profile › Edit › Administrators › Aggressive Anti-Spam (Android: pencil icon; Desktop: Manage group).
- If it removed a normal message: Recent Actions › Report False Positive.
- Clean up a raid: select the messages › Delete, then tick Report Spam, Delete… Clean up a raid: select the messages › Delete, then tick Report Spam, Delete All from (name) and Ban (name), or Restrict instead.
- Slow things down in Edit › Permissions: Slow Mode or Charge Stars for Messages.
- If someone impersonates you, write to @NoToScam.
Watch out
- The filter can hit ordinary messages, and Recent Actions keeps only 48 hours: check it often.
- Reports are anonymous; if you disagree with the outcome, a new report counts as an appeal.
- Your account can be limited too: reported accounts can only message people who saved their number.
With Gem
Gem doesn't filter spam or file reports. Nearby: it approves join requests to your project's chats by your rules and each person's language, points people to the chat in their language, keeps rules pinned in groups and removes "joined" lines.
