Talk with voice and round video messages
What it is
A voice message is a recording you send by holding one button; a video message is a short round clip, good for a quick hello or a reaction. You can pause either one while recording, trim a voice message before sending, or make a message one-time, so it plays once and disappears. Anyone can read one as text instead of listening.
How to do it
- Press and hold the mic button in the message bar, speak, and release to send.
- Tap the mic once to switch to the camera, then hold it to record a round video; tap the camera to switch back.
- Swipe up while recording to lock it hands-free. Now tap the pause button to… Swipe up while recording to lock it hands-free. Now tap the pause button to pause and the mic or camera to resume, drag the start and end markers to trim a voice message, or tap the view-once icon before sending.
- To read a message instead, tap →A on it.
- With Premium, choose who may send you voice and video messages: Settings › Privacy and Security › Voice Messages.
Watch out
- A video message lasts up to 1 minute.
- Without Premium you get a small weekly allowance of transcriptions, and only for messages up to 5 minutes long; Premium makes them unlimited.
- In a group boosted to level 6, every member can transcribe voice messages.
- A one-time message is deleted as soon as it has been played.
With Gem
Gem doesn't record or send voice or video messages. Nearby: send voice notes to your project's Knowledge in @gembot and Gem learns from them; it also reads the voice messages people send it in a chat with @gembot.
